2018.3.8 (thu) – 3.26 (mon)

Glancing at the storming Sea of Japan, I’m headed towards Wajima in winter. They reside near the water away from the center of the city, where their serious, methodical work were taking place.

Coincidense does not exist in the world of working with lacquerware. The unpainted vessels are carved and prepared down to 1mm by skilled carver, and the way setups for the jobs are planned is so immaculate, it is almost artistic. The vessels go through layer after layer of meticulous undercoating, and at last, for the last finishing coating, they are brought into a cleared room in almost ritualistic style.

When listening to their thoughts on lacquerware, they each have their own take. The one thing they have in common is, they all strive to possess deeper understanding of the characteristics of wood and lacquer while going through many trials and errors, and they will not cease learning until they achieve what they are looking for in the lacquerware.

At this show, we had a good fortune of adding a new artist, and we would very much hope to present something outstanding, with three lacquerware works by three painters.
